DEVELOPMENT: AN OVERVIEW (NIGERIA)

Development is all we want, it is what we have been clamouring for in the face of autocracy. People have been working real hard to ensure sustainable development in their areas of endeavour. Teachers, doctors, lawyers to mention but few, have often been zealous in the discharge of their duties towards national objectives, the ideologies and realization, upholding the principles of development.

A look at the documentation, national policy on education, one will see a flawless, victorious channel to national development as it reflected all that is worth inculcating from childhood to adulthood, all that equips an individual physically, vocationally, socially and otherwise. The government’s plans towards achieving these objectives too are perfect… in theory.

But in reality, there are conflicts over conflicts even before this century. On the news, we hear either non-payment of salaries or fuel price hike which automatically raises the prices of other commodities. Then there is a strike, parents come home fierce with barren pockets, schools close down, workers down tools in protest and the whole economy is crippled. Worker are called back and all pretend that all is well and the cycle begins, on and on it goes. In situation like this, how does one achieve sustainable development?

The process of development is relatively long term, so is poverty alleviation and so is the developmental process of achieving a nation’s objective through education. Let us begin to look inwards to the young generation, knowing that our dreams can be real through them. We feel the national policy on Education needs no review but strict adherence. By subsidizing education ( or making it free) and accessible to children of school-going ages, the nation will take a new turn.

Computer Education at the Elementary level

The role of computer education in our primary schools can cot be over-emphasized as it has brought an all rounded turnover to the various levels of education, the economy, politics and the likes in Nigeria, Africa and the world, the impact most especially felt in the computer-revolutionized developed nations of the world. Computers are revolutionizing our lives form retail trading to cross border, in government and private bodies alike.

A foundation in computer in theory may sound complex but the simplicity lies in the curriculum construction and the methodology used in the delivery to suit the pupils. In education, cost is of little essence because it is sure that not all that is we invest is lost.

In primary schools of today, computer aids the inculcation of permanent literacy and numeracy and the ability of a child to communicate effectively. Simulated audio-visual learning aids are used for this purpose. Computer generated images have been proven to be effective in teaching and learning situations.

The introduction of elementary computer science and its continuity will ensure a sound basis for scientific and reflexive thinking, as a necessity for a growing child in a developing society like ours

Civic responsibilities and political history can be taught to primary school pupils by computer animation and other audio-visual peripherals attached to it. By so doing, pupils in wild excitement will become more aware of governance, past and present, good citizenship and the likes, which is necessary for the effective participation in and contribution to the life of the society.

Information technology is a new trend in every aspect of our daily lives and it is becoming more accessible and acceptable everyday, everywhere. The reason is because of its flexibility, affording the child the ability to adapt ,to his changing environment locally and globally.

For character and moral training, the computer can be quite effective if well manipulated in tale-telling, poetry recitation and so on. Playing a perfect role as a correctional facilities. By interconnectivity, computer are used in communication and to channel a worth course.

The computer covers a wide range of field as earlier said and we know this will make the elementary school child versatile, giving the opportunity to develop manipulative skills that they may be functional in the society within the limit of their capacity.

Computer literacy at the primary level of education will serve as a basic tool for further educational advancement and career procurement. With the knowledge of computer science and in preparation for the trade and craft of the locality, professionalism is assured.

There are electronic dictionaries, e-libraries, e-bibles which will avail the child the opportunity to learn at his/her own pace. All of these programs are user-friendly, easy to manipulate for effectiveness.

On the part of the primary school staffs, computers will take the places of heaps of files and cabinets of papers. Academic information can be accessed and analyzed at a glance without searching files and rummaging cabinets. Continuous assessments can be easily calculated and stored safely.

And lastly we can not overlook the recreational role played by computers. This is in relation to the adage that goes, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Practical psychology has proven that play is a very effective enhancer of learning and the computer through its wide range of games is a perfect choice.

Recommendation:

In order for us advance economically and technologically, generation after generation, computer education must be incorporated at the elementary schooling level. A new, reviewed and implementable curriculum is necessary.

Computer technology has unlocked the secret mysteries of our lives, providing solution to every individual from various works of life. It is here to stay as the revolution has just begun. It is its introduction and full application to not only the primary but also other levels of education will positively help in the realization of a country’s educational and national objectives.

Long live all computer science educationists and students in the prospects of the introduction of elementary computer Science to pre-primary and primary education in Nigeria and Africa. Long live the Lagos State College of primary Education. Long live Lagos State and long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Gender Equality

Some people call it role displacement responsible for the demoralization and imbalance in today’s society, but it is far from that, their argument favour male domination even when it is clear that the male folks far exceed their boundaries. Equality as a theory or concept will be workably realized if only education is given utmost priority.

Talking Gender + Equality in Africa, and presumably the world, we may say that we are still clinging to the bosom of our stone-age way of life, our traditional induction and the now religious doctrine of male supremacy.

Rights are violated if their owners do not know they own them. If this theory is to work, and well too, emphasis must be placed on women’s rights for childhood and by law in ensuring:

· equal educational opportunities as their male counterparts.
· That sex and gender right be entrenched in school curriculum at the secondary and tertiary level, respectively and
· Semi-formal and formal education be given to members of the public on rights and constitutional issues.

The school alone cannot take charge of all these but with the help of the media, ministries of education, corporate bodies, religious institution, governmental and non-governmental organizations and the entire members of the public. Ensuring development requires participation as development cannot exist without it. Participation cannot take place without communication. Information is power, support it. The time for change is now. Take charge.

Thank you.
